The Boy Who Cried Wolf

One thing I learned very early on is to scream “fire” instead of “help” when you are in a dangerous situation. This is because people have grown too used to hearing other people or kids scream for help in a playful situation, that they have grown immune to it and don’t recognize it as an actual cry for help anymore. The following story sums up this situation perfectly and teaches you to not fool people too often, as they will lose their trust in you.

Aesop
Aesop was a Greek storyteller of the fables today known as “Aesop’s Fables”. He lived from around 620 until 564 before the current era but his existence is to this day not fully confirmed. Aesop died at the age of 56 in Delphi, Greece. His stories were never found as written pieces but were carried through centuries by being told over and over again. “The Aesop Romance” is a fictional story about the fabulist’s life portraying him as an “ugly slave” who acquires freedom and spent his life advising others

Definition of “Crying wolf”
To “cry wolf” basically means that when somebody screams for help even when they don’t need it, it leads to people not believing them when they actually need help.

Summary
The story “The Boy Who Cried Wolf” is about a man looking back on the days when he was a young boy and did a terrible mistake. He starts telling the reader about how his father used to send him out on the field to watch over his sheep. The boy was very bored very quickly since the sheep didn’t do an awful lot except for eating grass. He would have much rather spent the time playing with his friends but his dad insisted that it was important for him to be there in case a wolf shows up. Then, he got the idea to make his job a little bit more fun. He started running into the village screaming “Wolf!” until all the villagers ran out to the field to chase it away. Once they go there and realized that there was no wolf, the boy started laughing at them and the villagers got mad. Sometime later he repeated the joke, but this time he went one step further. He put red paint on his arm to pretend that the wolf already got to him. Everyone was concerned and ran out to the fields only to, again, find nothing. Everyone got mad, including his dad, and the only people that thought it was funny were his friends. After some days again the boy was sitting in the field, bored as usual, when suddenly the sheep started running around and the dogs were barking. That’s when the boy saw the wolf and ran into the village to get help. But nobody cared because nobody believed him.

The simple lesson from this story is that “nobody believes a liar, even when they tell the truth”. Having fun is one thing but breaking other people’s trust can be very dangerous when you really need them. It’s better, to be honest, and find different ways to entertain yourself.
