The Bomb

When it comes to games, the variations are endless. There’s games that are all about running or speed, involve different equipment such as balls, ropes or sport cones and of course, more chill games that are often being played in a seated position. A mix of these attributes make up the game that I am going to explain to you in the following paragraphs.

What do you need?
The requirements for this game are simple: a ball or a object that is easy to be passed on to one another (jacket, blanket, pillow, shoe, plastic bottle, …) and some fellow players (min. 7, max. 50). We always preferred to play the game outside but it is definitely suited for inside as well.

How to play?
You start by forming a standing circle with all the players. There should be space of about a little less than a meter between you and your fellow players, so feel free to adjust the size of the circle as fitting to the number of players. Whatever object you chose as the bomb is then given to one of the players. Another player of the group has to be selected to stand in the middle of the circle. The job of this person is to close their eyes and count down from 20 to 0. He or she starts by saying the number 20 out loud and then continues to count down in his or her head. The last three numbers are again being said out loud and when the player arrives at 0, he or she says “bomb”. The speed that is being counted at will be chosen by the player in the middle and can differ from number to number. It is important that the rest of the players don’t know how fast the person in the middle counts and, especially, when the word “bomb” is being said. While the player in the middle counts down, each player on the outside has to pass the bomb on to the person standing next to them.
Your goal on the outside is to not hold the object (the “bomb”) in your hand when the player in the middle finishes the countdown with the word “bomb”. If you are holding it in your hand, you are out and have two options: You can either sit or lay down on the spot that you are standing on. From now on, you are an obstacle that makes it harder for the people around you to pass the bomb along. If you decide to sit down, the person next to you has to run around you but if you decide to lay down, the person has to jump over your body with both feet leaving the ground at the same time.
However, when you are still in the game and have to run around or jump over people in order to pass the bomb on to the next person, it is all about speed. Once you passed on the bomb, you immediately start running back to your spot the same way you came there, meaning running ZigZag around the sitting people and jumping over the lying people with both feet at once. It can sometimes happen that when passing the bomb on to the next person, that person has not returned back to their spot yet and is still running, in which case the bomb can just be dropped off at the empty spot which they can then pick up once they’ve returned.
To make the game harder, the person in the middle can change directions while counting. This is done by clapping once. In this case, the “bomb” is being passed on in the opposite direction, which also results in different players having to run and jump over the others.
The game then continues like this until there’s only one person left, the winner.

I hope you enjoy this game and have fun playing!
