Summary
“Let’s be friends” is a funny story for kids written by Murray Hunter. It was illustrated by Emma Bosman and designed by Wilna Combrinck. The story is about a shark and his upcoming birthday. He wants to celebrate his birthday with friends, but first, he has to find some. He is a little bit scared of swimming out into the ocean to the others, but he still wants to try. First, he meets a seal and greets him excitedly. The shark asks if he likes to swim, just like him! He asks if they could be friends but the seal gets scared and swims away. The shark is very disappointed. Next, he meets an octopus and asks if they like seashells, just like him! He asks if they could be friends but the octopus swims away. Later, he meets a diver and asks if he is a fish, just like him! The diver gets scared and swims away. The shark goes home sadly and sits alone with his birthday cake. He thinks that nobody wants to be his friend. Suddenly he hears a knock on the door. Once he opens it, many different animals come inside to celebrate the shark’s birthday with him. They were all there when he tried to make friends with the seal, the octopus and the human and felt sorry. The story ends with the shark being surrounded by his new friends, being happy!

The shark struggles to make friends since many of the sea animals are scared of him and don’t want to talk to him. Even though he might be ‘different’ or intimidating, he is still just like the others and just wants to find friends. In the end, you can see that even when people reject you there will always be someone sticking up for you and they will make you feel loved. On the other side, it also shows that you should look out for others. The shark’s new friends saw him being left out and joined him at his birthday party so he wouldn’t be alone. Nobody deserves to be rejected and judged like that and it’s important to make everyone feel involved, even though they may be different than you. Murray Hunter teaches an important lesson with the story “Let’s be friends” while it’s still fun. It functions as a good bedtime story for every ocean-loving kid and still gives them something to think about or talk to their parents about.
