Concentrating and giving all of your attention to one specific thing can be challenging. Getting distracted by something small can happen very fast which is often no problem since you can shift your focus again in no time but in this game, losing concentration is fatal.
What do you need?
There is no additional equipment needed besides a group of players. The game can be played with only three players but I suggest playing with at least five to make it more fun.
How to play?
To start, all the players have to gather in a circle and sit down.
In case the players do not know each other a short introduction round is necessary because the names play a main part in this game.
The game then follows a special rhythm and a text that the players say at the same time. This includes slapping your lap, clapping your hands and snapping both fingers one by one.
Let us get into the rhythm:
Step 1: slap your lap with both hands; one on each thigh (“con…”)
Step 2: clap your hands (“..cen…”)
Step 3: snap the fingers of your left hand (“…tra…”)
Step 4: snap the fingers of your right hand (“…tion”)
This is the motion we will be doing the whole game and that will be repeated every time; only the words differ. The words are written in brackets and spell out “concentration” for steps 1-4.
Step 5: slap your lap with both hands; one on each thigh (“concen…”)
Step 6: clap your hands (“…tration”)
Step 7: snap the fingers of your left hand (“now”)
Step 8: snap the fingers of your right hand (“begins”)
If this seems complicated, do not worry, once you start playing it it will all make sense. Steps 5-8 spell out the phrase “concentration now begins” and following step 8, the names come into play.
Step 9: slap your lap with both hands; one on each thigh
Step 10: clap your hands
Step 11: snap the fingers of your left hand (“your name”)
Step 12: snap the fingers of your right hand (“the name of another player”)
Every player follows these steps (1-12) with the lyrics, except for the lyrics from steps 11 and 12. Only the players whose turn it is says these lyrics: the name of themselves and another player.
Steps 1-8 are only said at the beginning of each round. This means that when the game starts, every player follows steps 1-12. After step 12, the players go back to step 9.
When your name is being said in step 12, it is your turn next to say your name in step 11 and then say a different name in step 12.
This goes on until one player messes it up. This player is then out of the game and a new round starts. A new round means step 1-12 and then only step 9-12 until another player messes it up.
To make things more interesting, the speed should steadily increase which gives you less time to think about the names when it is your turn.
If you play the game more often, you will get better at it and the steps will feel natural.
I hope you enjoy this game and have fun playing!
