The Fateful Blinking Game

Hiding and controlling facial expressions is not for everyone. If you are someone that has a hard time being discreet, this is the perfect opportunity to practice it.
In the ‘fateful blinking game’, hiding your facial expressions and going unnoticed are two of the most important features and as you probably already guessed, the facial expression that this game is all about is ‘blinking’.

What do you need?
The equipment required for this game only consists of two main components: a lot of players and chairs. The exact number of players is not important but I recommend playing with at least 10 people to make the game fun, the more the merrier. Once you gathered all of your players, you have to set up a circle with the chairs in which each player needs a chair; with one exception. One of the players has to be the host and does not need a chair. This means that the number of chairs equals the number of players minus one.

How to play?
The game itself is very simple and the rules are easy to remember. The first step in the game is to select one of the players to act as the host, as already mentioned in the last paragraph. When everyone has a chair that they are sitting on in the circle and the host is selected, all the seated players close their eyes. The host then walks around the whole circle. He or she has to select a few players to be the ‘murderers’ and none of the other players can know who they are. The number of ‘murderers’ should be adapted to the number of players, f.e. if there are 20 players, I suggest choosing three ‘murderers’. Once all the ‘murderers’ are selected, they have to open their eyes to find out who else got selected. At the start of the game, none of the other players are allowed to know who the ‘murderers’ are so make sure to check that no one is cheating while closing their eyes.
If you followed these steps and now have players sitting in a circle with a few of them being secret ‘murderers’, you are ready to move on to the main part.
The idea of the game is that the ‘murderers’ kill the other players by blinking at them. The players’ goal is to find the ‘murderers’ and the goal of the ‘murderers’ is to kill the other players with no one noticing. By making eye contact with a player, a ‘murderer’ can blink at him and he or she has to die theatrically and fall off the chair. The ‘murderers’ have to blink at their victims obvious enough so that they know it is not just a normal blink, f.e. winking, blinking twice in a row, etc., but at the same time not too obvious so that none of the other players catch them blinking and become suspicious. When you are dead, you are out of the game and can’t talk; that is very important. Since the dead players know who the murderers are, they are not allowed to give any hints and have to remain silent until the end of the game, or at least not make any comments about what they witness. If a player thinks that they know who one of the ‘murderers’ is, they raise their hand. Once two people raise their hand, the host counts down from three. There are now three scenarios that can happen:

  1. Both players point at the same person and are right
In this case, the ‘murderer’ dies.
  2. Both players point at the same person and are wrong
In this case, all three players die; the two people that pointed at a person and the person that was being pointed at.
  3. Both players point at different players
In this case, both players die.

The game then goes on until there are either no ‘murderers’ or no players left.

I hope you enjoy this game and have fun playing!
