If we want to speak about music, for sure we cannot forget to mention the “ anthems”.
When we search on a vocabulary the definition of anthem we will find that it is a musical composition that represents a specific group of people or a country. So we can define this type of “music” part of the culture of a restricted group. These types of composition (I’ll call it like this because define it a song means minimalising too much) are often composed and played by an orchestra that sometimes is accompanied by a vocal choir, that makes it much more official.
These composition most of the times are created by very talented compositors that only after years of pure fame and in particular when they become the symbol of a group or even of the country, their masterpiece can be oficialized as an anthem.
Other times anthems can derive from liturgical music, an example of this can be found in England, where not only the official one “god save the queen” is formed by a very ancient religious melody, but also the “noon official anthems” if we can call them like this, derives from passages that we can find in the Bible. With non official anthems, I mean compositions that are used during very important celebrations but are not so famous as the official one. If we want to listen and discover these types of anthems, we only need to see a replica of the coronation of King Carl.
Till now I spoke about national and non official anthems (used during political events), but there are other types of anthems:
There is the flag anthem, that is a composition that extols and eulogizes the flag, I would say that every country in the world has is own flag anthem. Unfortunately the country can’t recognize these anthems as officials because they can change from an area to another, so it is difficult to choose only one.
There are also the sports anthems, in these cases the compositions often are usually international famous songs, one of the most common can be “we are the champions” by Queen, or another can be “seven nation army” by the white stripes and many others.
At the end there are also the anthems that we define “shared”, this because are so important and represent so many people that can be “adopted” as an official anthem by more countries, this is the case of the Anthem “Nkosi Sikelel iAfrika” that speaks about independence, for this motivation Tanzania, Namibia, Zambia and finally Zimbabwe have all the same official anthem.
To finish this article, I wanted to mention also really quick the Greek anthem, this because its creation is quite particular. The composition is called “Hymn of freedom” and the names derives from the homonym poem of Dyonisos Solomos, in fact the first stanzas of the anthem are also the first lines of the poem that are sing.
